UPI Expansion 2025: Reaching 4-6 More Countries

Towards the end of 2024, NIPL (NPCI International Payments Limited) announced its plans to broaden the reach of UPI in 2025. UPI has already marked its global presence, and in 2025, UPI is ready for further expansion.

UPI Expansion 2025: What Are The Plans?

NIPL started the global expansion of UPI in 2021, and the first country for UPI's extension was Bhutan. Ritesh Shukla (NIPL – CEO), mentioned that in 2025, UPI is all set to reach 4-6 more countries.

The aim of NIPL is to expand the presence of UPI where Indian tourists commonly visit. The previous 7 countries too were selected based on the same parameter.

Even though he kept the target of expanding UPI in at least 3-4 countries in 2025. This is because collaborating with international partners becomes complicated sometimes. So, he believes 3-4 is a decent target and if things go well, they can make 6 countries by year-end.

Countries for UPI Expansion in 2025

In 2025, UPI Expansion is expected in the following regions:

  • Qatar
  • Thailand
  • Other Southeast Asian countries

The number of Indian tourists remarkably increased in these locations in the past few years.

UPI’s Reach As of Now

As of now, UPI is available in the following countries:

  • Bhutan
  • Oman
  • Mauritius
  • Sri Lanka
  • Nepal
  • France
  • UAE

France and Sri Lanka were the latest parts of UPI expansion till 2024.

Further Plans of NIPL With UPI

NIPL has an extensive plan for UPI expansion. They understand well that marking UPI's presence in multiple countries is not enough. The merchants of those markets and users need a thorough understanding of accepting and conducting UPI payments.

The plans include:

  • Creating awareness among the merchants and educating them regarding UPI usage
  • Securing partnerships with banks so that they can guide their users about international transactions on UPI
  • Notifying the travelers during their international journeys about UPI transactions in the country (if UPI is supported) they are visiting
  • Making UPI operational in 6 international airport terminals

NIPL Assists Other Countries

Apart from the expansion plan, NIPL is stretching its helping hand to Peru, Namibia, Trinidad, and Tobago to build their own real-time payment solution alike UPI. India already signed a partnership with the Bank of Namibia for the same purpose.

Just the way UPI became a sovereign payment option in India for real-time digital payment, these countries too are willing to get the same solution. As of now, they want it as their domestic payment solution for digital transactions. Later, they can use it for cross-border payments.

Peru is the first South American country to work with India to develop UPI-like payment system. Nations have understood the convenience, reliability, user-friendliness, transparency, and security of UPI. It facilitates instant payments without cash dependency. Due to the convenience UPI brings, a huge unbanked population has created their bank accounts. It overall strengthened India's economy. So, it is obvious that other countries want to develop the same solution to modernize their payments and seek the help of the pioneer.

Not just that!

NIPL is also helping UAE and Mauritius to develop their domestic card system like RuPay cards.

Expansion and Innovation – UPI To Shine Bright Globally in 2025 & Beyond

UPI is not just praised in India; rather, it is equally popular outside India. UPI is thriving with solutions like UPI Lite, UPI Lite X, UPI 123Pay, etc. with the sole target of making it accessible to all Indians. NPCI has provided UPI facility for NRIs living in 12 different countries to use UPI for paying Indian accounts.

Behind UPI's global expansion too, NIPL keeps the benefits of Indians in the very first place. Let’s hope for more updates on the successful functioning of UPI in different countries very soon.
